Matt Sparks
Love him or HATE HIM

the first time I met Matt Sparks was the second day that Transitions was open.  I was sitting on the hip they had and he was there and talked to me a bit and asked me to do a tailwhip.  I did one for him and he talked a lot so I nicknamed him Timmy.  He was just a little kid learning to ride then, but now he can do tailwhips better than almost anybody in the world.  He started typing to me online and he would beg for me to come by his house and come watch him drop off a big ledge by his school.  It's been about 4 years since then and I've been to his house many times and still haven't seen him ride off that ledge.  He doesn't sleep like normal people and has been known to drink a case of Red Bull per day.  Over the years he's been hucking himself like crazy to learn new tricks and get good.     He's not too famous yet, but he's getting there and he's going to be one of those kids that will do tricks that will leave a lasting impression on the world of BMX.  --jps

june 24th, 1984 detroit michigan..

what got you into riding?

going to my local bike shop far too much, and finding an issue of ride i could relate to..

who are your favorite people to ride with?
nate moroshan, jake finley, eric vasquez, dave jacobs, ron thomas, steve cuesta,  so many more people that just easily sleep the mind.

what keeps you motivated?

the idea everyday of new things that havent been done, and sometimes that good feeling that i could be pushing myself.

favorite places to ride?

chenga, chenga 2, woodward, section 8, studio 334, cxp in joilt

how'd you get so good at tailwhips?

just the natural want to do that trick in and out of stuff,  everyone has their trick..

how has the big roll-in at TRP helped your riding career?

just gave me something to play with tailwhips on

what is Voice? how'd it come about? and what's in store for it in the future?

its a company me and ryan hall started, just because we just wanted to make some stuff that we liked how it looked, we wanna keep making stuff, but financial stuff is rough.

is there any trick that you can't learn?

ohhhhhh yeah. lots of stuff i just suck at.

what tricks scare you?

flip stuff, i dont like being upside down, and i dont like taking my hands off my bike..

what's up with your hair-do?

i'm so lazy, and i like how it smells.

are you part albino or what?

not really, but my boy steve cuesta looks like he is, and he is damn good, so its alright.

how come you can do the hardest tricks ever but almost fall riding over pyramids or doing tailtaps sometimes? ha

obviously you've never been intoxicated.. :)

how'd you get the nickname Questionboy?

back in the old forrest park (forrest park respresent) days there was older riders there and i was like, 13 or something and i asked questions a lot, cause i was intersted, and one day one of them called me question boy and it stuck. now i am almighty and knowledgeable!

its amazing so many people can bitch about so many things, i dont like thinking about it and im not too sure if i would want to.

what's the most embarrassing moment of your life?

i honestly don't think ive had one, i feel stupid as it is around a lot of people, so the most embarrassing point is kinda a blur, cant even pick one.

why is your dad so cool?

Simple.  My dad looks at life a little differently, and thanks to that, it helps my riding, and helps my future, one of the things he care about most.

tell the tale about what happened when you threw a flagpole through some kid's window on the way to school one day
?
i've done a lot of stupid things back in the past, and that was one of them, and really shouldn't get into that..

what was it like winning the CFB expert title for 2002?
CFB was probably one of the coolest things I'll ever remember from 2002.  I had a great time with my friends and the entire trip was worth it.  The contest was real run and there were a lot of people there, so all in all, I had a great time.

did you expect to win it?
No, Eben rules.

what was your summer at Woodward camp like?

real fun and real short. long days and a short summer.  but it was probally one of the best things i could have done, and i have to thank Woodward camp and bob lewis for everything.

how has foam and resi helped out your riding?

not really, foam is almost scarier to jump into sometimes, and ressi is really just like a nice box, you jsut bounce more when you take it, so its still fun, worth trying

.how was your trip to Greenville? tell all about it
best thing ever, best ramps, nice weather, got to see a different atmosphere and watch other riders on there own park, at there own level, it was insane.

what do you see in your riding future?
hopefully more riding and free health insurance

what are your future riding goals?
Just to not get hurt, and to push myself

do you have any plans to move?
i'd like to do a lot of traveling and find a place i would like first, and then decide a future from there on.

any words of wisdom?
think before you act.

any thanks?
my  Parents, Chris G, Albes,  jamie at alliance, nate moroshan, and all my friends.
